What is the Swedish Massage Advisory Council?
The aim of the Swedish Massage Advisory Council, which was formed in 1998, is to uphold the professional skills of masseurs and the credibility of the business. We promote research and represent the business as concerns government and the EU. The Swedish Massage Advisory Council is a cooperative effort of independent training/education organisers and the Swedish Association of Body Therapists (Kroppsterapeuternas Yrkesforbund), of which the majority of Sweden.s masseurs are members.
The Swedish Massage Advisory Council consists of educational establishments with long experience of training masseurs only. We quality assure serious courses in order to guarantee a supply of well-trained masseurs for the business area. This is achieved by all students who train in our member schools undergoing a national test and receiving their certification through us. At present, in June 2007, 14 schools are members. Becoming a certified masseur
Students in a Swedish Massage Advisory Council member school take the certification test at the end of their courses. However, this test, which consists of a theoretical and a practical part, is open to anyone who has completed a qualified massage course. The basis of the certification includes the results of the tests and a student assessment by the relevant school leadership. The certification test is on a national level and provides masseurs with opportunity to show that they have completed a serious training course and work in a professional manner.
Courses must be quality assured
By allowing students at our member schools to take the national certification test, each school receives an assessment of the knowledge levels in each class. This is essential information for quality assurance activities. The schools have agreed within the Swedish Massage Advisory Council to maintain a high standard, consequently they must always employ competent teachers and supervisors. They also fulfil certain requirements as concerns ethics, hygiene and insurance.
Instructions for good course design
The majority of Sweden.s masseurs are trained at one of our member schools. This has provided us with broad experience of massage training and working conditions for therapists. Our ambition is to contribute to the implementation of high quality courses which do not only provide students with the opportunity to work professionally for a living, but also develop them as professionals.
Based on our joint experience, the Swedish Massage Advisory Council has established instructions which form the basis of the schools. course planning. Ethics
Masseurs who are certified through the Swedish Massage Advisory Council maintain proper patient and liability insurance. They have also undertaken to follow established ethical guidelines for the business. This concerns respect for client integrity, the duty of confidentiality and only to practise the form of therapy that they are properly trained for. If a client is not satisfied concerning how a masseur has carried out a treatment, has advertised or similar then a report may be submitted to an Ethics Council.
